5 Ways to Stop Taking Dieting So Seriously That You Fail
Why the heck is dieting so hard? Because you’re taking it too seriously, simple as that. Try these five easy tips for dieting to help you avoid failure and make it something to enjoy.
1. Stop Following Unrealistic Body Goal Accounts on Instagram
Step number one to taking dieting less seriously, delete these unrealistic goals. I am an average Joe, and you are too (probably). I will never look like the body goal models I used to follow on Instagram. Those six pack abs are not in my future, I’m just trying to little weight here.
So why beat myself up about it? Why keep reminding myself?
While it may seem harmless following accounts like this, it takes a toll on your mental well-being. Every time you see a post, do you find yourself thinking something like “Man, I wish I had a body like that…”? UNFOLLOW. Go out there and try to be the best you, stop wishing you had the body of someone else. Plus, they’re always trying to sell you something– weight loss tea, waist trainers, and what have you. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
2. Let Your Subconscious Do the Work
Stop thinking about it so much! This may seem a little counterintuitive, but hear me out. How quickly do you get burned out when you’re obsessing about every little calorie? How hard is it to figure out what’s the healthiest option when you’re dining out. Are you weighing your food? Kicking yourself when you’re over by a few calories?
Here’s the deal. These questions are the recipe for diet failure. So here are a couple of tips to help you stop thinking about it!
- Larger fork, smaller food: a subtle way to trick yourself into eating less! Instead of freaking out about how much you’re eating, let your subconscious cut back on the calories for you. This is a scientifically proven way to shrink your portion sizes and consumption.
- Eat at Home: skip the fast food and go straight home. This one seems obvious, yet it still eludes most of us. It’s critical in the beginning of your diet to just GO HOME. Stop thinking about the fast food, stop stressing about which menu item you can eat at your favorite restaurant, and just get home.
3. Bring on the Competition (and the Money)
You know what makes dieting easier? A little competition. You know makes it even easier? A little money on the line. I’m sure this is pretty universal, but one thing I hate it is losing a bet. So make your diet a bet! All you have to do is find someone to make a bet with (don’t say you don’t know anyone, there are ALWAYS dieters lurking around), set a time limit, and pick an amount!
One thing to stress here, make sure the amount you bet is something that will sting. I’m not saying empty your bank account, just pick an amount you wouldn’t want to give up! It also helps to pick something to buy with the amount you’ll win from the bet– a nice outfit, that cool tech item you saw on amazon, basically anything you want! Makes the bet that much sweeter when you win.
4. Bring on the Condiments
Don’t restrict yourself to only the chicken and spinach nonsense! One easy thing you can do is find the right condiments and sauces. I’m sure you’ve heard the whole “mustard has zero calories,” but like….mustard, gross.
There are tons of sauces and dips that fall into the low-cal, low-sugar category. Hot sauce for one. But also delicious options like this Spinach Avocado Dip or Mango Salsa. Give these a try and all of a sudden, diet meals are your new best friend.
5. Plan Your Treats!
There is nothing I look forward to more than a big bowl of ice cream. It’s a lot easier than you think to stick to a one-per-week treat. All you have to do is pick a treat. Something glorious. Something you really, really want. For me it’s not even just ice cream, I like a hot churro in there, too.
Make it your end of week prize! Look forward to it, because if you do your week right, you’ll deserve it. Plus, you won’t have to feel guilty about it. It was planned, it’s an award for a week well done. Go you!
Hopefully these five easy tips for dieting will it a little less painful. Good luck to you and all of your weight loss endeavors.
